~ James Joyce

Joyce

James Augustin Aloysius Joyce (n. Rathgar - Dublino, 2 febbraio 1882 -- m.

SOLITARIO

Grigio-dorate maglie di luna fanno
tutta la notte un velo,
lampioni a riva sul dormiente lago
viticci di alburno tramano.
Maligne canne bisbigliano alla notte
un nome – il suo nome –
e l'anima mia tutta di delizia,
di vergogna vien meno.

ALONE

The noon's greygolden meshes make
All night a veil,
The shorelamps in the sleeping lake
Laburnum tendrils trail.
The sly reeds whisper to the night
A name - her name -
And all my soul is a delight,
A swoon of shame.

MUSICA DA CAMERA

In quell'ora che ogni cosa ha quiete,
O solitario custode dei cieli,
Non senti il vento notturno
E le arpe sospiranti Amore che schiuda
I pallidi cancelli dell'alba?
Tu solo desto, quando la vita riposa,
Ascolti le dolci arpe sonate
Nunzie d'Amore, e il vento
Notturno che in antifona risponde
Finché la notte è svanita?

CHAMBER MUSIC

T that hour when all things have repose,
O lonely watcher of the skies,
Do you hear the night wind and the sighs
Of harps playing unto Love to unclose
The pale gates of sunrise?

When all things repose do you alone
Awake to hear the sweet harps play
To Love before him on his way,
And the night wind answering to antiphon
Till night is overgone?

Play on, invisible harps, unto Love,
Whose way in heaven is aglow
At that hour when soft lights come and go,
Soft sweet music in the air above
And in the earth below.

SEMPLICI

O bella bionda,
sei come l'onda!

Bella come è fonda, bella, sei tu!

Datemi, prego, un orecchio di cera
che mi schermi dall'infantile cantilena
e un corazzato cuore contro a lei
che i semplici raccoglie della luna.

SIMPLES

O bella bionda,
Sei come l'onda!

Of cool sweet dew and radiance mild
The moon a web of silence weaves
In the still garden where a child
Gathers the simple salad leaves.

A moondew stars her hanging hair
And moonlight kisses her young brow
And, gathering, she sings an air:
Fair as the wave is, fair, art thou!

Be mine, I pray, a waxen ear
To shield me from her childish croon
And mine a shielded heart for her
Who gathers simples of the moon.

NOTTURNO

Smunte nella tenèbra
entro a sudari, pallide stelle
le loro torce agitano.
Fatue luci dai più remoti cieli schiaran fioche,
archi su archi svettanti,
la navata della notte nera di peccato.
Serafini,
le osti perdute si svegliano
a servire sino a che
in illune tenèbra ognuna ricade, smorta,
levato che abbia e agitato
il suo turibolo.
E a lungo e alto,
per la notturna navata che si estolle
battito di stelle rintocca,
mentre squallido incenso gonfia, nube su nube,
ai vuoti spazi dall'adorante
deserto d'anime.

NIGHTPIECE

Gaunt in gloom,
The pale stars their torches,
Enshrouded, wave.
Ghostfires from heaven's far verges faint illume,
Arches on soaring arches,
Night's sindark nave.

Seraphim,
The lost hosts awaken
To service till
In moonless gloom each lapses muted, dim,
Raised when she has and shaken
Her thurible.

And long and loud,
To night's nave upsoaring,
A starknell tolls
As the bleak incense surges, cloud on cloud,
Voidward from the adoring
Waste of souls.
